Sabbath:
Instituted in creation
Made law in the 10 commandments
Observed by God’s people in the wilderness
Distorted by the Pharisees
Interpreted by Jesus
Changed days at the resurrection
Sabbath is a part of the Shalom of creation, it is meant to be a reward to God’s people, not a burden, like the rest of God’s moral law.
Remember there are three uses of the law 1. to show us our sin and our need for a savior. 2. To restrain evil. 3. To teach us how to please God.
Now in this text, we see Jesus confronting the Pharisees on how they have distorted the command to rest.
Pharisees obey the sabbath to recommend themselves to God
Christians celebrate the sabbath to remember that they belong to God
Pharisees obey the Sabbath to display their holiness
Christians celebrate the Sabbath to remember that they are only holy through Jesus
Pharisees obey the Sabbath to show their strength
Christians celebrate the Sabbath as evidence that they are weak
Pharisees obey the sabbath because they think they are self reliant
Christians celebrate the sabbath to remember they are utterly dependent on God
All of the moral laws of God are meant to draw us into the joy of Gods peace.
Of all the commands of God, there should be no other as easy to follow.
If you find it hard to rest, you may be self reliant.
