Jonah: “The Plant of God”

my notes were very sparse this week. This book is made up of seven “episodes” there are three sets of parallels, and one that is on its own. The first set is Jonah’s commissioning and flight, coupled with Jonah’s decommissioning later in the story… The second is Jonah and the Pagan sailors, coupled with Jonah and the Pagan Ninevites… The third pair is Jonah’s. Grateful prayer, coupled with Jonah’s angry prayer. The only episode that doesn’t have a partner is Jonah’s lesson about compassion that we are looking at today… 1.The message of this book is not that God … Continue reading Jonah: “The Plant of God”

Jonah Introduction: “The Word of The Lord Came to Jonah”

Today begins a study of the book of Jonah. Jonah is a book that you are familiar with if you grew up in church. You have no doubt seen the story on a flannel graph board, or in a movie, or read the story to your children at night as you put them to bed. My goal in preaching through this book is not to go merely through the story and tell you about it, but I want to get into the story behind the story. You see, many people today read a story like this and just try … Continue reading Jonah Introduction: “The Word of The Lord Came to Jonah”

Ephesians 6:5-9 “Earthly Masters”

This week’s sermon focuses on our workplaces, and how the way we respond to our bosses or employees is one of the primary ways we share the Gospel with them. Ephesians 6:5-9 (Mp3 file for download) I don’t know about you, but I really enjoyed having the young people up here for the sermon last week. It was a good reminder for all of us parents and children that we are called to a life changing reality of the good news of Jesus. And as a reminder, we must always keep in focus that the things that we are being called … Continue reading Ephesians 6:5-9 “Earthly Masters”

Ephesians 6:1-4 “Children and Parents”

ephesians 6-1-4 Children and parents First off, I want to give a shout out to all the young people who are in this portion of the service. I am really glad you guys are able to be here of this part of the service. The reason you are here is because I want you to know that what we learn up here in the sermons each week are not just for old people, it is for all people. I want you to know that God has spoken to you in His word, and that is a big deal. I also … Continue reading Ephesians 6:1-4 “Children and Parents”

“The Word Became Flesh” John 1:1-18

Christmas 2013(Mp3 file for download) In preparing for today’s service it came to my realization that I would only have about 10 minutes to preach. Let’s see how this goes. Open your Bibles and read with me the text John 1:1-18 Jesus meets you where you are It seems like more and more, we are made aware of people who will be l this Christmas in mourning. Christmas is a time to celebrate and rejoice, and have fun.  It is not meant to be a time of mourning. And yet, for so many in our world, the expectation of happiness … Continue reading “The Word Became Flesh” John 1:1-18

Ephesians 1:15-23 “Paul’s Prayer”

Ephesians 1-15-23 Pauls Prayer (audio file for download) So far in this letter we have seen two main elements, we have seen the introduction, and we have seen exaltation. In Paul’s introduction, he states who he is and who we are. In that section we looked at identity. Next he begins to exalt in God’s goodness, and lays out a very brief but packed statement glorifying God for who He is, while explaining to the Ephesians and to us what God has done for us. He now turns and shares what you might call his thesis statement. He lays out a … Continue reading Ephesians 1:15-23 “Paul’s Prayer”

Doubting Thomas or Authentic Jesus?

Doubting Thomas (Audio File for Download) (This is one message where the notes are not nearly as in depth as the audio. I will say that we had a glitch halfway through the message and had to switch microphones. You may notice the change in sound.) I have been preparing to begin the message series about basics of the Christian Faith, using the Ephesians passage that we read every week as the basis. I was going to begin the series this morning, but I have changed plan. We are going to defer for one week. This is for two reasons. 1. … Continue reading Doubting Thomas or Authentic Jesus?

Nehemiah 4 and 6: “Opposition to God’s Work”

Nehemiah 4 and 6 _opposition_ (Audio File for Download) Here is the part of the series where we start to move fast. We are going to look at material contained in 2 chapters today. The Bulletin says chapters 4 and 5, but we are actually going to skip 5 and read six. The reason is because both 4 and 6 describe the opposition to Nehemiah’s work, and how he dealt with it. That is going to be the focus of our time this morning. The Big Idea of this message is this: when God calls us to a task, there will … Continue reading Nehemiah 4 and 6: “Opposition to God’s Work”

Nehemiah 3 “What Are You Building?”

Nehemiah 3 _What Are You Building_(Audio file for download) We have been looking at Nehemiah and how he went about rebuilding the walls around Jerusalem. We saw how he was deeply distressed to hear of his people in the city and how they were left without walls or gates. We saw how he prayed and sought after God’s will for him towards the city, and last week we saw how he assessed the walls in secret, how he cast vision for the people of Jerusalem, and how they saw the vision and rose up to build.  If you have joined … Continue reading Nehemiah 3 “What Are You Building?”
