Jonah 1: The Call of God

The call of God Today is going to be a very practical sermon on the call of God on our lives. It will be based in Jonah 1. Let’s read it together. Three questions I want to ask you and hope to answer in a small way this morning. Before I get too far into this message, I want to define the word “calling” for you. The way I am using it is as follows. A calling is an activity, or action that you engage in by God’s design, and for His purpose. Ephesians 2:10. What is God calling you … Continue reading Jonah 1: The Call of God

Jonah Introduction: “The Word of The Lord Came to Jonah”

Today begins a study of the book of Jonah. Jonah is a book that you are familiar with if you grew up in church. You have no doubt seen the story on a flannel graph board, or in a movie, or read the story to your children at night as you put them to bed. My goal in preaching through this book is not to go merely through the story and tell you about it, but I want to get into the story behind the story. You see, many people today read a story like this and just try … Continue reading Jonah Introduction: “The Word of The Lord Came to Jonah”

The Emmaus Road

Today, I don’t know how many of you know this, but two years ago this Sunday was the first Sunday that I preached at Emmaus. A lot has happened since then. Today I wanted to do a little vision casting for us. Since coming here I have preached a lot of sermons, but I have not taught on the text that this church is named for. Today, I want to preach on the text that speaks about the town near Jerusalem called Emmaus. There are a few things that I want to draw out of this text of … Continue reading The Emmaus Road

Easter Sunday 2014 1 Corinthians 15:1-22

Today we celebrate the consummation of the central event in the church throughout time. The Resurrection of Jesus Christ. Think with me for a minute about the saddest moments of your life. What were they? Well, if you are like me, it was probably the death of a loved one. The hurt and pain of an offense, or a disappointment in life can be replaced by something else, but there is something final about death that makes is so excruciating. When I have done funerals, the thing that I say is this, there is no greater evidence that our … Continue reading Easter Sunday 2014 1 Corinthians 15:1-22

Palm Sunday 2014 Luke 19:11-27

Hosanna means save now! The crowds were shouting that as Jesus entered Jerusalem. Before he entered the city though, he wanted to clarify something for His followers, so he told a parable. Before we read it I want to reiterate something I have said before, and want to say again. I have heard it said, and I agree that at the root of every conflict in your life is unmet expectations…. I would say that most likely, every disappointment, difficulty, and turmoil in your life can be boiled down to some extent to unmet expectations. Have you ever felt … Continue reading Palm Sunday 2014 Luke 19:11-27

Prayer: Apprehension

So last week we looked at our approach to prayer, specifically, how we come, and who we come to. The truth that Christians need to understand the most about coming before God is that we are coming to Him as a Father. We used to be His enemies, we used to be hostile to Him, but now we are His children, and His friends. We come to Him out of our need to be with Him, not our desire to look important, or to sound eloquent to others. Today we are going ot talk about apprehension in prayer. i … Continue reading Prayer: Apprehension

Prayer: Approach Matthew 6:5-9

Today begins a three week study of the topic of Prayer. We are going to look at Prayer from three different angles.  Approach, Apprehension, and Application. This week we are going to look at who we are coming to, and how we are coming to Him. Next week my hope is that we as a church really apprehend what prayer is. And the third week we will apply what we have learned in a special service where we spend time in prayer and song. If you would open your Bibles to Matthew 6, we are going to read … Continue reading Prayer: Approach Matthew 6:5-9

Guest Preacher Lew Combs: “Union with Christ”

Lew Combs (audio file for download) It was great for me to get to visit the great folks of Spotsylvania Presbyterian Church this past Sunday. While I was gone, the chairman of the Board of Stewards at ECC preached in my place. I am grateful for his leadership and I am glad to serve the Lord along side Him and the rest of our board. I don’t have his notes, so this is the audio only. The quality is rough since it was recorded from a smart phone. The message is great though. Ephesians 6:10-20 “Who are You Fighting?”

This week we looked at who is our primary enemy according to Ephesians 6:10-20. Many times we are tempted to look at people as our primary enemy, but Paul tells us we do not wrestle against flesh and blood. Ephesians 6-10-20 (Mp3 for download) Open your Bibles please to Ephesians 6:10, we are going to read through verse 20. Before we read, I want you to write something down on your bulletin if you have a pen. Write down the first thing that comes to mind when I ask you this question. Don’t think about it, just  write the first thing … Continue reading Ephesians 6:10-20 “Who are You Fighting?”
