Easter Sunday 2014 1 Corinthians 15:1-22

Today we celebrate the consummation of the central event in the church throughout time. The Resurrection of Jesus Christ. Think with me for a minute about the saddest moments of your life. What were they? Well, if you are like me, it was probably the death of a loved one. The hurt and pain of an offense, or a disappointment in life can be replaced by something else, but there is something final about death that makes is so excruciating. When I have done funerals, the thing that I say is this, there is no greater evidence that our … Continue reading Easter Sunday 2014 1 Corinthians 15:1-22

Palm Sunday 2014 Luke 19:11-27

Hosanna means save now! The crowds were shouting that as Jesus entered Jerusalem. Before he entered the city though, he wanted to clarify something for His followers, so he told a parable. Before we read it I want to reiterate something I have said before, and want to say again. I have heard it said, and I agree that at the root of every conflict in your life is unmet expectations…. I would say that most likely, every disappointment, difficulty, and turmoil in your life can be boiled down to some extent to unmet expectations. Have you ever felt … Continue reading Palm Sunday 2014 Luke 19:11-27

Prayer: Apprehension

So last week we looked at our approach to prayer, specifically, how we come, and who we come to. The truth that Christians need to understand the most about coming before God is that we are coming to Him as a Father. We used to be His enemies, we used to be hostile to Him, but now we are His children, and His friends. We come to Him out of our need to be with Him, not our desire to look important, or to sound eloquent to others. Today we are going ot talk about apprehension in prayer. i … Continue reading Prayer: Apprehension

Prayer: Approach Matthew 6:5-9

Today begins a three week study of the topic of Prayer. We are going to look at Prayer from three different angles.  Approach, Apprehension, and Application. This week we are going to look at who we are coming to, and how we are coming to Him. Next week my hope is that we as a church really apprehend what prayer is. And the third week we will apply what we have learned in a special service where we spend time in prayer and song. If you would open your Bibles to Matthew 6, we are going to read … Continue reading Prayer: Approach Matthew 6:5-9

Guest Preacher Lew Combs: “Union with Christ”

Lew Combs (audio file for download) It was great for me to get to visit the great folks of Spotsylvania Presbyterian Church this past Sunday. While I was gone, the chairman of the Board of Stewards at ECC preached in my place. I am grateful for his leadership and I am glad to serve the Lord along side Him and the rest of our board. I don’t have his notes, so this is the audio only. The quality is rough since it was recorded from a smart phone. The message is great though. Ephesians 6:10-20 “Who are You Fighting?”

This week we looked at who is our primary enemy according to Ephesians 6:10-20. Many times we are tempted to look at people as our primary enemy, but Paul tells us we do not wrestle against flesh and blood. Ephesians 6-10-20 (Mp3 for download) Open your Bibles please to Ephesians 6:10, we are going to read through verse 20. Before we read, I want you to write something down on your bulletin if you have a pen. Write down the first thing that comes to mind when I ask you this question. Don’t think about it, just  write the first thing … Continue reading Ephesians 6:10-20 “Who are You Fighting?”

Ephesians 6:5-9 “Earthly Masters”

This week’s sermon focuses on our workplaces, and how the way we respond to our bosses or employees is one of the primary ways we share the Gospel with them. Ephesians 6:5-9 (Mp3 file for download) I don’t know about you, but I really enjoyed having the young people up here for the sermon last week. It was a good reminder for all of us parents and children that we are called to a life changing reality of the good news of Jesus. And as a reminder, we must always keep in focus that the things that we are being called … Continue reading Ephesians 6:5-9 “Earthly Masters”

Ephesians 6:1-4 “Children and Parents”

ephesians 6-1-4 Children and parents First off, I want to give a shout out to all the young people who are in this portion of the service. I am really glad you guys are able to be here of this part of the service. Ephesians 5:1-21 “Walk in the Light”

FYI, This sermon is about sex. Ephesians 5-1-21 (Mp3 File for download) There are notes below that I never got to. Open your Bibles to Ephesians 5:1-21 Last week… Identity, take off, put on, become who you are Today, Paul continues to build out how we are to walk out our identity in Christ. In this section he again in verse one he reminds of of something that is a very vivid picture. He says to be imitators of God AS BELOVED CHILDREN. Before we get further, lets think about that for a minute. How many of you have had a … Continue reading Ephesians 5:1-21 “Walk in the Light”
