James 3:13-18 Where is your wisdom from?

James 3:13-18 Where is Your Wisdom From? (audio file) Well, if you were here last week, you know that we got back into our study of James. We looked at the passage that addresses our tongue and how our words carry a great deal of influence, that our predisposition is to use our words to inflict pain because of our sinful nature. That when we become a Christian, our speech should reflect the change that has taken place in our hearts. When you have Christ in your heart, your speech will be transformed, as your heart is transformed by Christ. … Continue reading James 3:13-18 Where is your wisdom from?

James 3:1-12 Tame your Tongue

Well, we are back to James this week. We took a few weeks off from our study of this book to address the tragic shooting in Newtown Ct. and then last week we looked at Simeon’s prophesy about Jesus. If you recall before that we looked at the end of James Chapter two where he was telling us that Faith without works is dead, and that faith will be worked out in our lives if in fact it is real. The example that James gave us was that of Abraham believing in God’s promise to him, and his belief was … Continue reading James 3:1-12 Tame your Tongue

Zechariah’s prophesy about Jesus Luke 1:67-80

December 23 2012 (audio file) Well, here we are a couple days till Christmas. If you are a regular attender here, you know that we have been studying the book of James lately. We will pick that back up next Sunday. Last week in light of the tragedy in Newtown Ct. we hit pause on our study to look at how scripture speaks to tragedies like that one. If you missed it, there is an audio recording up on the web. We have been trying to get it up on the church website, but that has not been working, so if … Continue reading Zechariah’s prophesy about Jesus Luke 1:67-80

December 16- “What Can We Say to Newtown?”

What can we say to Newtown (audio file) In light of the tragedy that occurred this friday in Conn. I decided to hit pause on our study of James for two weeks and look at how we can find hope in the midst of so much pain and suffering we see all around us. I want to look at what our response should be to tragedies like this as Christians. How we should think about this stuff as it happens, and how we can offer hope to a hurting world. What does Jesus have to say to us as we see … Continue reading December 16- “What Can We Say to Newtown?”

Training Leaders International

You may not know this, but there are pastors all over the world who do not have access to solid biblical teaching. My friend Darren Carlson heads up an organization called Training Leaders International. They are working to bring that teaching to pastors in remote areas. If you want to see what it is about, check out the link below. I am looking forward to spending a few days with him and his family at the beginning of February while I attend the Desiring God Conference for Pastors. If you are so inclined, please pray for this ministry, and if … Continue reading Training Leaders International

James 2:14-26 “Faith and Works”

Fifth week of James. Last week we looked at how showing partiality to people based on their outward appearance is putting ourselves on the judgment seat, dishonoring to the people we look down on, and makes us liable for judgment. Most of all, the judgement of man is without mercy, however, the mercy of God triumphs over judgement.   This week we are looking at another difficult passage in James. Has anyone in here ever tried to buckle a kid into one of those new car seats? The ones with the two metal peices that are supposed to fit together … Continue reading James 2:14-26 “Faith and Works”

James 2:1-13 “Don’t be Partial”

James 2:1-13 “Dont Be Partial” (audio file) Fourth week of James. Last week we looked at a passage that dealt with how we receive the Word of God. As I have said from the beginning, the things that James points out for us are not things that will make us more Holy, but he wants to draw out for us symptoms of a deeper problem. You see, just as in our time, there were people in James’ day that wrongly assumed that “belief” in Christ was enough for them to be saved. They looked at the good news as something to … Continue reading James 2:1-13 “Don’t be Partial”

James 1:19-26 “Do as I Say and As I Do”

We are now in our third week of our study of the book of James. Last week we looked at how James reminds us to be joyful when we encounter trials of various kinds because our trials are not obstacles to our growth, they are the means of our growth as believers. We talked about how the trials the we face as believers are there to reveal the reality of our faith. I also want to remind each of us of what we talked about this first week of this study that the things that James will tell us to … Continue reading James 1:19-26 “Do as I Say and As I Do”

James 1:2-18 “What Joy”

Welcome to week 2 of our study of the book of James. Last week we looked at the key element to understanding the commands and instructions that James is going to give us in this letter. I highlighted how James saw himself, and the people he was writing to and how we need to see ourselves not primarily as what we do, but who we are in Christ… Our culture has a disconnect. it is between the known truth that if you want to be good at anything, you must experience trials, and the desire that we have as a … Continue reading James 1:2-18 “What Joy”

James 1:1 “Meet James, Who are you?”

James: Author: self designation: “a servant of God and of the Lord Jesus Christ” James was called James the Just. He was the brother of Jesus. Leader of the church in Jerusalem. Written most likely in the mid 40’s. We don’t know much about where he was or the circumstances surrounding the writing of this letter like we do about Paul’s letters. Recipients: “12 Tribes” This is a reference to the twelve tribes of Israel who come from the twelve sons of Jacob, who’s name was changed to Israel after he wrestled with God. It was a reminder to the … Continue reading James 1:1 “Meet James, Who are you?”
